Uganda Culture
Ugandan culture is big topic of discussion. Just like a country formed through amalgamation, Uganda is a collection of cultures. Thanks to ethnicity. The different tribes contribute individually to the cultural diversity that Uganda enjoys. The most pronounced cultures are notably those of the tribes from the Bantu ethnic group. These include: the Baganda, the Banyoro, Basoga, Banyankole, Bagisu and many others. Others tribes include; the Acholi, Langi, Iteso, Sebei, Karimojong and many more. Below we briefly discuss a few common details in perspectives most common in defining people’s culture.
Birding in Uganda
Uganda is an Avian kingdom. With over half of all bird species in Africa, Uganda is home to the richest collection of birds on the African continent. Given its climate and vegetation, many birds Uganda a favorable habitat for breeding. From the scenic shores of its great lakes to the lush forests of the Albertine Rift and the banks of the mighty Nile River, Uganda is undoubtedly an Ave kingdom. Whereas Uganda has only one endemic bird (Fox’s Weaver), 23 Albertine endemics occur here which are rarely observed elsewhere. These include the Handsome Francolin, Rwenzori Turaco, Rwenzori Nightjar, Dwarf Honeyguide, African Green Broadbill, Archer’s Robin-Chat, Grauer’s Rush Warbler, Short-tailed Warbler, Grauer’s Warbler, Collared Apalis, Regal Sunbird, Strange Weaver, Dusky Crimsonwing, and Shelley’s Crimsonwing among others. To your amazement, in just a period of three weeks, a total of 665 different bird species were recorded…. Pack your binoculars, some sturdy shoes and your checklist. Let’s go Birding! Surely, Uganda is undeniably among the most beautiful countries in Africa. While we are on our safari explorations, you’ll be a witness to the vast expanses of beautiful vegetation, mountains and refreshing sights and sounds as we travel together to the different regions of the country.
People of Uganda
The current estimated population of Uganda is above 40 million and majority of the people of Uganda are a very young population, with a median age of 15 years. Uganda is home to many different ethnic groups, none of whom forms a majority of the population. The population of Uganda consists of: Baganda who contribute 16.9% to the total population, Banyakole 9.5%, Basoga 8.4%, Bakiga 6.9%, Iteso 6.4%, Langi 6.1%, Acholi 4.7%, Bagisu 4.6%, Lugbara 4.2%, Banyoro 2.7%, other 29.6%. You’ll find all the tribes very hospitable. This explains why many tourists and vacationers find it easy to come back to Uganda. Thanks to the hospitable people of the land.
Flora in Uganda
With 49,000 km2 or 24% of the total land area covered in forest and woodland, Uganda is teeming with flora. Of these, 9,242.08 km2 are tropical rain forests, 350.60 km2 plantation forests and 39,741.02 km2 is woodland. Above 30% of these areas are protected as national parks, game reserves and central forest reserves. We surely say Uganda is a green country. Over 5,793 plant species exist in the Albertine Rift. Of these over 567, are endemic to the Albertine Rift itself. The different forests avail different opportunities to you as a tourist given their richness in Eco-diversity.
